Gary, I do agree with all you said but wanted to just add that WW1 did as much as anything to end the lever action as a primary gun and therefore the small rim 22 HP. With so many young men exposed to the virtues of the bolt action the lever gun was slide to the back seat. Many of those people owed their lives to the springfield and it would certainly do them well in hunting.
With so many who owe their lives now to the M16 is it any wonder that people like them? (speaking from experience here)

Gary, Also your lucky day. I thought I had got rid of all my 22HP stuff but I recently found a few cases and a box of 100 Hornady bullets. If you want I can send them when I return the 30-30 clip. Let me know. No cost of course.

I've heard that the Savage take-down feature presented another challenge?

Steven, Yes. As long as you use the barrel sights you are okay to 100 yards as a hunting gun. Introduce a tang sight or scope and now its anyones guess. However the problem mentioned here exists with basically all takedowns. IMO

Is the take down system the interrupted thread - half turn type? I can't quite tell from the photo. Thanks

The buttstock is serial numbered to the rifle and there is only one set of holes for the buttplate suggesting this was the original one.

This posting reminds me of a gentleman named Forest Merkner. I only saw a few of his wonderful and exotic 99's. My understanding is that he had the most complete collection of factory and other engraved 99's. He lived in Fontana CA. We used to chat at the california state trap shoots I am sorry now that I did not pay more attention to his 99 collection. I was more interested in Ithaca's and my other friend from those days Ray Bush who taught me a great deal about the repairing and care of Ithacas. But he was the one who intrduced me to Forest. Just a tid bit regards John Mc
