Calling a gun "vintage" says nothing about the gun but a lot about the person using the term. I was once in William Evans in London and the salesman described a gun he was showing as " a good honest gun" I tried to stop my snicker from turning into a sneer. It's all just marketing b/s to avoid calling the gun "old" or "worn out" or just " a piece of old junk" nial

I understand the term "honest gun". It means a shotgun in good shape, not a high quality gun but a shooter. Fox Sterlingworths are honest guns, if they're in good shape. Which the gun should be to be called "honest." No piece of junk or a worn out gun should be called honest.
Vintage is of course relaing to the year was made. "Honest" is a far better description than "Vintage."

Why would you sneer or snicker at such a comment? It is a perfectly sensible way to describe a used gun in good working condition - one that is not pristine but also has nothing wrong with it other than decent wear resulting from conventional use.
Stay away from William Evans - you make it hard for the rest of us.

I hate the faddish use of the word "vintage"; what the hell do guns and other antiques have to do with wine?

I always took "honest" gun to be a gun that was unmolested all original nothing done to it. Just my opinion.

With wine I believe vintage refers to a past season when the grapes grew well and the resulting wine was notable. With shotguns the term most likely points to a time when shotguns were predominantly doubles, unlike today where there are more semis and pumpguns in use. Although a Winchester 97 could be called a vintage pumpgun, in that it is from a time when pumps were a new thing. A past time of note?
