My tastes have changed and I bought a few upland doubles in the last couple of years with 26" barrels. The last being a 5-3/4 pound Parker VHE sixteen. I don't notice the barrels being 26" when I am using the guns.

I am sure I paid less than the guns would have brought had they had 28" barrels.

Best,

Mike

I have small gauge side by sides in 26,27,28,30 and 32 inch barrels and use to shoot 25 inch barrels on SKB 280.I have found in dove hunting that i bump the 32 and 30 inch guns on the stakes that hold up the blind.I will take 25 and 26 every time for quail and grouse, woodcock hunting.27,28 ok .Might shoot better on doves, ducks with the longer barrels.Bobby

32" are as long as I want but I'm equally happy with barrels as short as 26". When I see shorter barreled guns on a rack and I'm interested in one, I check to see if some knucklehead sawed them off, then out comes my micrometer and a snap gage to check chokes.

Some guns balance with shorter barrels and some with longer ones. Mine are now 28" or longer, but I have been happy shooting a 20 with 22" barrels in the past.

I personally have never seen much reason for barrels over 26" long for upland game hunting. I've used these for years and have never felt at a disadvantage.
It's a lot easier to swing right into a tree with those longer barrels though!! grin

I see a renaissance in respect for even 25" guns, especially if they are Churchill guns.

On subguage, I find 27" to be about perfect.

I think there is a bigger philosophical change that is dictating the interest in longer guns and disdain for short guns in some shooting circles: shooting style.

Hunting is on the decline and shooting is on the incline. I bet less than 20% of the guys at the gun club hunt. How does this matter? If you hunt you learn the Churchill method, natural method, or Orvis wingshooting method. Natural shooting is about drawing the gun on game and firing and for that reason, short barrels are not a negative and may be a big plus.

If all you do is trap, you get bad habits with long barrels that are not conducive to how you would approach a wild game target. I'm a mediocre trap shot but I always outperform these trap wizards in the field.

Short barrel guys are hunters, long barrel guys are shooters. Fair enough stereotyping?

Seems like the 25" Ithaca/SKBs on GunBroker are the current "best deals" going in the used gun bidness. High quality, great design all for $600 or so. Beats any new gun I know of in the price range...Geo
