My limited experience with the PA store matches many of the previous comments. There are one or two knowledgable guys who really run the Gun Library, and then there are the "Cabelas guy" who are at about Walmart level. I bought my Fabarms from the counter guys, and =it had an issue on the first day I shot it. I called up the store and they gave me to the the guy at the Gun Library, and he said come back and exchange it, I drove all the way up to the store (3-1/2 hours from my house) and then got a very rude run arround from "Walmart counter manager" because the Gun Library guy was not there. Needless to say after I was treated rather badly by the guy, I've not bought another gun from them... I had to send it off the H&K for warrenty work...

Chasseur, had the GL guy been there, I'm confident they would have taken care of the warranty work for you.

The escort out (or for that matter, escort in--to the GL, from the customer service desk) policy varies from store to store. I was just at the new La Vista, NE (Omaha) store, and their policy is that if you bring in a gun, somebody has to walk you back; if you buy a gun, somebody has to walk you out. Owatonna, MN--neither is true, although they put on trigger locks when you bring a gun in, and if you buy something, they put on a lock when you head out (which the service desk then removes).

What they offer you, I've found, depends on the store, whether you talk to one of the guys "in the know", whether you're talking trade or selling outright to them, and how badly they want what you have. I've made bunches of deals with them (mainly the Owatonna store), and the price they put on guns I've either sold or traded to them . . . yes, they're obviously trying to make a reasonable profit, but it isn't like they're trying to get double what they paid me, or anything close to that.

Had a stock break at the wrist on about the 2nd or 3rd shot I took with a Brit double I bought from them. I knew I could get a refund, but they asked me what I wanted to do, and I said I'd like to have it restocked. They did that, no charge to me. While it's true they would've had to restock the gun anyhow, they could've given me my money back, restocked it, and put it back on the rack with a price increased enough to pay for at least a portion of the new stock.

Larry, I think the key word there is "if". Why should we have to take a chance on the right guy being there when we stop in? If I ran my business that way, I'd be OUTA business! Regarding trade ins: they had a gun on the rack just like the one I brought to trade, not as nice as mine, and it was MORE than twice what they offered me.

I'm glad you've had good experiences. They're OK on regular stuff, and interestingly, their fishing guys seem to be fairly knowledgeable and treat one pretty well. Like I said, if I dropped in and they had a gun I really wanted at a decent price I'd buy it, but I'm not gonna go out of my way. Too much trouble!

Cabela's is in now way a discount store. I and Cabela's sell the same flashlight. Our prices are the same. I double my money and I'm sure Cabela's gets a much better price than I do . So they are probably making a 2.5X profit.

I'm sure everyones experience with Cabelas varies. If you happen to be in the right place at the right time talking to the right person that experience might be more than acceptable. Or, even better if you have a personal relationship with one of the experienced knowledgable guys. I just don't want to take the gamble that I'll be dealing with one of the "Walmart" guys. I try to avoid Cabelas whenever I can.

Wow, if you guys think the Cabelas experience was bad, you definitely didn't shop at Edelmans!!! Fat Frank behind the counter was a piece of work...to put it kindly.

I have god memeories of Edelmans. 15 years ago I was into Swedish mausers and whenever Edelmans woud get a shipment in they would let me hand pick theones I wanted, $79.95, 69.95 on sale and occassionaly 59.95. I bought a bunch and waited for the price to go up and started to sell them to buy shotguns. Still have a few.

Most gun retailers like Cabela's have no real notion how to wheel and deal or sell used guns. And if you do not know what to buy or sell you can loose a lot of money real fast. Easier for them to price high and wait until it sells rather than sell fast and turn inventory over quickly like many regular gunshops do. Face it if the average gunshop sold five guns a week they would be closed but as long a Cabelas has the rest of the store they will be around for a long time. Lots of clothing and camo.
