Larry - According to the son of my best hunting buddy who worked for about a year at the Minnesota store NW of Mpls, that's exactly what they did ... typically paid 50% of the price they'd set for resale.

Fin, if you were running a gun business, you wouldn't stay open the hours Cabela's does, for starters. My local gun shop/gunsmith, for example, now has hours of 12-6, 5 days a week. Why? Because he lost his "front man", and in order to have any time at all to work on customers' guns, he has to lock the door. Otherwise, he spends all his time behind the counter. So . . . you've got a guy who knows a fair amount about guns, but he's available less than half the amount of time a Cabela's store is open. You pays your money and you takes your chances . . .

One hint on Cabela's: If you're planning to visit one of their Gun Libraries, go to their website. For each Gun Library, they list one or two names to contact. Call the GL in question and find out whether the guy whose name is listed is scheduled to be there when you're planning to stop in. Pretty much like finding out the hours of a smaller gun shop.

I've only inquired about 2 guns with Cabelas. One was in while at the Sidney store, in person, and the other over the phone. They would not budge on either gun's price. Both were fairly high priced.

Larry: Fine. Then set the hours for the GL so customers know when the guys "in the know" will grace us with their presence, like your local guy does. You've had good experiences, I had a lousy one; as I said, too much trouble. I'm sure they'll do just fine without my business; I'll do just as well without the aggravation.

I have had many dealings with the Buda,Tx Fine Gun Library and
everything has been a pleasant experience.The purchases have been reasonable, although many things are in the Stratosphere,but I have them to be very knowledgeable ,fair and
negotiable.

Fat Frank? That has to be a "Gun Store" in Jersey, or the Bronx?

Fin2Feather, what you should have done when that guy was making calls and not waiting on you, was to go and ask for the Manager. I guarantee you would get some action then, they don't want any negative feedback and the employees are told this. Believe me I know.
Anybody that is anybody in Cabela's, on their shirt there will be an emroidered name on it, this is the specialist in charge of that department. There might even be two. The other people are just hired off the street, some know a lot and some know very little, but they teach them. The regular employees wear a plastic name tag with their name on it.
So if you want any decent service, try to see the person with the embroidered name, he or she will give you the best service, and not be discourteous to you, plus they are the ones who will usually discount the gun. They won't do it off the top of their heads, but they will look it up in the computer and see what they bought it for and if any money was spent on it. Most guns they will discount some. And finally as someone stated, don't bring your gun for a trade, unless you don't care about it's value.

Revdocdrew, that L.C. Smith you posted from Cabela's, the one that Turnbull restored, I never new they had a Hunter Grade with sidelocks plus the marking on the barrel rib were different. For that price, I bet the barrels are a marriage. It is an older Regular frame gun, with the chambers opened. Turnbull's work alone on that is probably 2 figures.

Charlie, there may be a difference from store to store. However, I just sold (not traded) a Ruger Red Label 28ga to the Owatonna GL for $800. I can guarantee you it won't be tagged at $1600, and that it will sell for less than what it's tagged if someone makes a reasonable offer.

Larry - I think you might get better deal as a frequent customer who's obviously knowledgeable about the market. For regular customers like you they might trade margin for volume!

The Term "Hunter Grade" was a mistake. Some Cabela D.A. didn't know what the hell he was talking about. The gun is most likely original. The barrel markings are late Hunter type. Just look in the new L.C.Smith book, there are several pictured with those markings.
