Tony,
Earlier you mentioned traditional linseed oil with drying agents. Could you please elaborate on what the drying agents are and what ratios are used.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I thought better of asking for details; "secret formula and all that stuff, you know, what". wink

Cheerio,

JC

Steve,

Embarrassingly...I don't know. All I know that it is basically linseed oil with some sort of mild drying component to speed up the process. It certainly sinks into the wood and pores as can be seen. I don't think it's a secret mix, maybe the basic oil from Helston gun services down in Devon here in the UK.

Many thanks for the comments guys. Makes me feel like I've done a reasonable job!

Doing this sort of restoration is sometimes a compromise. A new stock on something that is nearly 140 years old is always a compromise. The way that I look at it though is that without it the gun was dead and buried. It needed a lot of TLC and a new piece of wood.

Cheers

What is it about these old guns that draws us in?

Tony,

Your restoration work makes all of us look at our wall hangers
in a different light. What stain was used on the stock?

Hi Larry, very little colour deepening actually. The wood was a dark rich deepness. Alkanet root mixed with a little linseed oil.

Japan drier, available at a hardware store, is a cobalt compound that acts as a drier. It reacts with the oil in the linseed and promotes hardening (drying). There are also chemical agents available, not at the hardware, which will prevent the UV caused yellowing of linseed.

Thank you very much. I'm on a shoot tomorrow in Yorkshire and I've decided to take this as my backup gun!

Phil, having radiotherapy to zap painful tumours, keeping me in a holding pattern for a bit so I can enjoy Christmas but it makes me feel quite tired sometimes.

Cheers
