... Anybody that is anybody in Cabela's, on their shirt there will be an emroidered name on it, this is the specialist in charge of that department. There might even be two. The other people are just hired off the street, some know a lot and some know very little, but they teach them. The regular employees wear a plastic name tag with their name on it. So if you want any decent service, try to see the person with the embroidered name, he or she will give you the best service, and not be discourteous to you, plus they are the ones who will usually discount the gun. They won't do it off the top of their heads, but they will look it up in the computer and see what they bought it for and if any money was spent on it. Most guns they will discount some. And finally as someone stated, don't bring your gun for a trade, unless you don't care about it's value. ...
Thank you for the advice. They will be opening their 1st Illinois store later this year. It will be just a few minutes drive from where I work. So I can see spending some lunch hours at their gun library. I will keep this in mind. Pete

JDW, thanks for the info; good to know. Frankly by that time I'd already decided I didn't want the gun. And my story has a happy ending: on the way home my wife told me to go ahead and buy the gun I REALLY wanted (I'd been looking for a cheaper alternative). Things have a way of working out!

I've purchased a few guns at the PA store. I agree with many posts, it's somewhat luck of the draw as to who you get in the GL. I've had guys that would take me to the O/Us when I asked if they had an Ithaca 100, and I've had guys that would be able to pick out a bunch of good selections when I asked to see an entry level sporting clays O/U.
As for price, you just have to check out everything and see. I got a great deal on a Caesar Guerini there, as well as a belgian A5...but I've seen SKB 100/280s and BSS so far off the scale it was laughable. I'll admit I'm not knowledgeable to the higher end stuff, but imagine similar price disparities are found on up the line. They will deal on price, especially if you're willing to take your discount in the form of merchandise. I went in with a group of 6 friends and talked to the GL guy, he gave us a nice discount for the group buy. Overall, my experience is positive with Cabela's and I frankly don't get the bad rap that it gets...but perhaps other stores are not run the same as the one in PA. You won't find any true steals, but you can get to the low end of market with some work.
