I will be in Memphis, Tenn. for a weding the weekend of Jan the 7th. I should have some free time that Saturday. Is that not where the DU museum is located? Any idea if it is open on weekends? Any good gunships there? I will probably be in dire need of diversion. Thanks.

You must be referring to General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Suh!! One of the very few General Staff Officers in Lee's Command who wasn't a West Pointer--and I'd like to think, even as a Damn Yankee (due to location, but my heart is always with Dixie)that both General George Patton and Admiral William Halsey copied his strategy- hit them hard, advance, keep moving- and unlike Lee's major mistake at Gettysburg- lack of proper advance recon--Forrest was a firm believer in the principle that, in today's lexicon, reads like this- "Any amount of money spent on accurate recon and intel will always pay bigger dividends in end results"- Forrest also would have approved of the USMC's motto: "Failure is NOT an option"!!
"The field is the touchstone of the man"..

Tyler,
The DU museum is there, new home of Bo Whoop (I and II). Also, make a reservation one evening and eat at The Rendezvous. That isn't an option for me, it's a MUST !!
I'll probably be out there about then, too. Actually, across the rivvah at Forrest City, hunting the L 'Anguille River bottoms. I'll be eating in Memphis at The Rendezvous one night.

May God bless America and those who defend her.

A friend of mine attended a 90 something birthday party for one of General Forrest's grand nieces recently. She remembered him as being a stern old man but after eating with them he always bowed to her mother and the cook and said " mighty fine meal, a soldier needs to be well fed to fight."

Just to clarify a bit, Bedford Forest was certainly a great battle field commander. But the principal of war of seizing the initative (which means to maintain it as well) wasn't invented by him unless he was with Alexander the Great a couple thousand years earlier. Grant and Sherman practiced it exceptionally well also, but the south affords them scant praise for it.

Gents, I believe Forrest's main maxim was "Put the skeer on 'em,and keep it on 'em.
