Mike, thanks for the pictures. The Thomas and Simon connection is on one gun for sure. Pete, of some interest in your thought of Thomas and Simon being 2 1/2 miles apart in Chicago and the possibility of Simon using public transportation to work for Thomas. One E. Thomas Jr. gun is marked Made for D H Louderbach. Mr. Louderbach seems to be a business man of the first order and , among other things, built much of the transit system in Chicago. His other business interests are broad. Maybe just trivia, but Simon may have gone to work on the Louderbach built train.

CWK - Did you expect you'd get one tenth of the information you've gotten thus far?

The education you can get here is but one facet of the beauty of this website.

Well, apparently I got it wrong in 2008. Simon is shown in the 1880 census as a gunsmith.

CWK,
We have been so busy trying to identify the manufacturing source for your gun we failed to give you acomplete answer to your basic question re,"Not For Ball" The 11B means that the barrel was bored as an 11 gauge .751 nominal diameter and the 12M means that the barrel is choked to 12 gauge .731 nominal Diameter. This results in .020 choke constriction.Your gun should of course under the British rules for proof be chambered to accept as a 10 gauge shells!

Holy Cow, I am blown away by all of the gun knowledge on this site. A coworker recommended the site and said you guys know a lot about shotguns. I would be willing to bet there is very little, if anything, that you guys don't know. Well done!

I took it to a local gun dealer who, by his own admission, was no expert on old shotguns. He said it would sell for $500.

Any idea of the value?

Thanks, CWK

He still does not know anything about old shotguns. He is seeing the missing butt plate and damascus barrels. To the right collector it is worth at least 3x times that figure. If you sell it, print out this thread and include it.

CWK,

If you don't mind I would like to see a picture of the back of the butt where the plate is missing. Many of the Chicago makers guns are found with very fancy skeleton buttplate and such,I'm just curious.

In defense of Pete's information, I do this all the time. I picked up a man's name and one other marker say his wife's name and then go from there.

Just look at these two, it's scary how close they are.
