Was out shooting my favorite go-to five stand gun today, a 1886 Charles Lancaster best sidelock ejector single trigger.

Unfortunately, I broke an ejector! I took the forend apart and the part that broke appears to be a more complicated version of a classic sidelock mainspring. Thankfully, both pieces are still in the forend and the other one (not broken) is also a good example for duplication.

Questions:

1. Is there anyone in the USA that is qualified to do this work that meets the terms "good and fast". (cheap is not as important as good+fast)

2. Do I need to send the gun smith the whole gun or is the forend sufficient?

Thanks for any referrals you can provide.

P.S.- If you haven't owned or shot a Lancaster sidelock they are about the nicest gun I've ever owned. Far and away superior to my Boss and Purdey and for a London gun, they can be had for a very reasonable price.

Rook:
For your ills, I would contact Dale Tate. He is a qualified "ejector man" from a London shop I won't mention. He can fix things up.

Yes. He will need the whole gun. Ejectors relate to a lot of stuff that isn't in the forend.

With Dale, you will certainly get "good." I can't vouch for "fast." It certainly won't be cheap.

If you send it to me in Houston, I'll get it done in London for you, if you have difficulty finding a US based solution.

Lancaster used several ejector systoms ,if it is the one I am thinking of then it is not an easy one to repair . The spring serves a mulitple function and it is a case of being absolutly right .Almost will not work .I had one in some time back ,it was beyond me and I had great dificulty in getting some one to take on the job .Hope you have better luck ,But as said it wont come cheap and it wont be quick

Yikes...two words for you..."Beautiful Disaster". :-(

The spring used in the Lancaster/Perkes is a real bastard. I have a friend who right now has his Lancaster in the shop with this same problem. The man doing the gunsmithing is a very highly regarded, English trained (Churchills) "Jobber" on the east coast..so far he's 0 for 2 in making the spring and getting it to work. This "jobber" knows how to make springs. These springs are a "bit" different to say the least. Its a butt kicker of a job, no doubt about it. I believe the original quote for the job was around $1100. I have no idea what the final price will be.
I would think about sending the gun to a person who has experience in building and working with complicated mechanisms. Gunter Pfrommer comes to mind as does Abe Chaber. Gunters experience and learning his craft at Ferlach probably put this job in the "do-able" category for him. He knows complicated mechanisms and how to make parts for them. Abes very good too.

One word of advice....if you find a gunsmith to make the spring and it works...make sure you ask him to make some "blanks" that can be filed up and fitted if it ever happens again. Most gunmakers who craft complicated springs (think Purdey mainspring) make a few at a time.

Good luck.

For expediency, you might ask Nick Makinson, look in DGJ for his ad, if he can do it. He picks guns up in Port Huron, Michigan. I find him a wizard in metal. He has worked on any number of ejector mechanisms for me and understands the appropriate metals, timing and fabrication needs. Nick is the one who built my WR ejectors from scratch to replace the original by Perkes in my Blanch hammer gun while also restoring the Perkes mechanism in case I want it put back in the gun. His number is (519) 471-5462. If he is in the country, he can probably accommodate your turn around needs if you let him know.

Rookhawk, Many good gunsmiths have been mentioned. Ken Eversull, Boyce, LA is a master gunsmith who is capable of making many parts and understands complicated mechanisms. He is not inexpensive. It might be worthwhile to give him a call. (318)793-8728
