There are really 3 shooting techniques with a shotgun: snap shooting, sustained lead and pass through. I find myself snap shooting on game but rarely do this with clay pigeons. Rather I use sustained lead on some shots and pass through on others, especially on incoming targets but primarily I shoot a pass through method on most flying objects. What technique do you use, think is the best, and why? PS: I think this question pertains to double guns and is not OT because I use these methods with these guns too. [spoiler][/spoiler]

Follow up question: are some techniques better suited to upland bird situations, others better for waterfowl shots?

Amarillo Mike is my shooting coach, and I use his methods. On a straight away shot, point gun in the general direction of the bird, close both eyes and shoot. Same technique on R-L, L-R, incomers...

I tried to observe Amarillo Mike's methods, but after being shot once, I started diving for cover whenever I saw his gun come up. Consequently, I'm still using the old two eye open technique.

Come on guys, I tried to ask a useful question.....that pump thread was getting kinda negative and repulsive. I think with heavy guns, sustained lead is useful with decreased chance of stopping follow through as compared to real light guns where pass through seems to work better.

I guess I never give technique a thought be it game or clays. I just up with my gun and do it.  Now I'll probably be thinking about it and miss them all.

Like Cobra, I ust everting I got. Swing thru sometimes on skeet high 2 or low 6. I have to be angry to break those before the stake. Short stroke sustained/decreasing across the middle. Sometimes I find myself using the sustained miss method which incorporates a lot of yips, flips and spatters.

IMO the subject target determines method of lead needed. One method does not work with all situations and types of guns. Unfortunately, you have to shoot enough targets (live & clay) in enough different situations with various (target & live bird) guns to instictively know which method to use.
A Springer Spaniel, a 6# double and a fair day to hunt.

Truth is, a bird hunter has every imaginable form of lead in his pocket and will use them all in the course of a season. The snap shot in the last millisecond before the bird passes out of sight (should'a seen him sooner), the sustained lead on a high dove (not recommended but I do it anyhow), the swing through when the bird surprises you from behind(always while my legs are twisted in brush). And there's no way to guess which will be used or when. It's just instinctive. Even clays will frequently mix two of the leads. Only snap shooting will be left out (except when I finally remember it is a doubles and not single). So, buzz, there's no real answer......
