I'm so looking forwards to dove season, at the same time I know it'll still be so damned bloody hot... Gahhh!

Been thinking the very same thing. Getting the gear out since Sunday. Looking over which muzzleloader, will be my "go to" gun this year.

Got the 28 ga Parker repo with 28" barrels, straight grip and double triggers out of the safe last week. I had it restocked with a longer piece of French walnut and had the chokes opened to 1/4 and 3/4 after I bought it at the "close out" several years ago. It was to be the perfect dove gun. I am determined now to shoot it enough to take full advantage of its potential. Have several cases of shells and enough components to last for many years. Thanks to help from this board, now have a replacement stock for 28ga red label that I will cut down to fit youngest daughter who has expressed an interest in shooting. Yeah, I've been practicing with the gun of the year, a Remington 1900 ejector in 16ga with 30" IC and Mod barrels. Its funny; the dove opener used to be Ors D'oeurves for the real hunting season, now it is the main event.

I witnessed the same thing happen in my father's hunting life, now it is my turn. Old age is a TRIP!...Geo

Drought has burned several acres of corn back on one of my farms. Thinking about asking the farmer who rents it about having five or ten acres bush hogged and planted in wheat. Not worth harvesting what corn is there but have to consider if crop insurance comes into play. Often they require you to harvest it even when it is nothing to harvest. Might not even be an issue. 90% of the farm is under irrigation and this is just where the water does not reach. Sad to see corn tassel when it is just knee high and stalks about the a finger in diameter.

Drought is going to make farmers life very hard this year in many areas. Birds also may be in short supply due to very dry conditions. Hope all do well this year and leave a few for next year.

I was in the store over the weekend and the salesman was showing it off to anyone interested in doubles. It is frickin' amazing. A wand.

I am on gun buying restriction. I'm just trying to live vicariously thru others that purchase...at least for a while.

I'm taking Grandpa's little straight grip JC Higgins 20 gauge. It's been to the field every opening day of dove season for more than 50 years, he can't take it anymore so it's my job now. I wish Dad would get the forend finished for it. He stocked it about 1960 but left the tenite forend in place. It's what you call one of those long running projects. Last time I checked he did have the wood, that was a couple years ago......

I'll be using the same little Yildiz .410 I opened the season with last year. It was good for a limit on opening day last year, should be this time, too. I think using .410s on the first shoot of the season might become "tradition" for me.

Grandson Jackson will be using his new Ithaca SKB 200E twenty gauge. If he does as much better with it than he did last year with his .410 Stoeger Uplander the doves are in trouble.

He knows, I told him last weekend when they spent the night with us, but the gun still hasn't arrived. The auction house lost the FFL I had my dealer send, then after receiving it again waited another few days to let me know I had to prepay the shipping on it before they would send it. No problem with that, just that they do one thing at a time when they could have done it all in one phone call.

Oh well, good things are worth waiting for (I hope).

I bet he's tickled to be getting it. Looks like all you need for a repeat of last year is fresh shrimp and birds. Plenty of both around here.

Jackson said he wants to go to Bay Gall, out nearest sporting clays range, when the gun comes. He won't have to twist my arm to do that.

We've got the birds already. Sunflowers are drying down and the birds have already taken to them. Numbers will just build up in the next month.

I don't know what the meal will be for lunch. Another low country boil would be alright with me! I grow the sunflowers and my two buddies supply the meal.
