I will figure out how to cancel my subscription to their magazine tonight. I am going to write the advertisers on their television shows.

A puny 13,000 internet "signatures" triggered the dismissal.

National Geographic Takes Hunter Off TV Show
By ADAM W. KEPLER
Published: September 2, 2012

The National Geographic Channel said on Friday that Melissa Bachman, an animal hunter who writes for a blog called “Hardcore Huntress,” will no longer be a participant in the coming reality series “Ultimate Survivor Alaska,” after an online petition protesting her involvement received more than 13,000 signatures in less than 24 hours. According to the Hollywood Reporter’s Web site the petition posted on Change.org by Tim Martell, a Florida resident, called for a boycott of National Geographic and stated that the cable channel had abandoned its “traditional stance of conservation and protection” by working with Ms. Bachman, who also has her own Web site that contains hunting videos, tips and a photographic trophy room. “The National Geographic Channel has carefully considered the public discussion of our series on surviving the wilds of Alaska currently in production and premiering sometime next year,” the cable channel said in a statement. “Upon further reflection we plan to eliminate one of the survivalists from the ensemble cast, Melissa Bachman. Hunting is not the focus of the show, and we regret the misinformation that has clouded what we hope will be an exciting adventure series set in the incredible Alaskan landscape.”

The only thing I like about Geographic are the pictures of naked natives laugh and there aren't too many of those anymore either. cry

I don't subscribe to NatGeo and consider their "reality" shows to be junk viewing and a waste of my time.....I have too many good books anyway. They will, however, get an indignant and carefully worded email describing their spineless and cowardly concession to the anti-hunting/gun establishment.

The really weird thing here is that the debut of "Family Guns" is scheduled for Sept 12 on the National Geographic Channel.

The clips I've seen show a family of gun collectors, primarily antique and "vintage" guns, the kind we like. Now will this silly uproar about this "huntress" make them think twice and decide to cancel what promised to be a good show about guns and collectors?

I've been looking forward to the debut and felt good that Nat Geo would air a show about gun collectors. Now how does this mix with the other? They'll probably turn tail and cancel it before it even airs.

What an incredibly inane world we live in these days! It's honestly getting to the point where I can't take it. I hear that kind of talk all the time and just file it as rhetoric, but NOW, well, now I'm the one who's saying it, and I see that it is actually true. So sad, so silly.

This is not real good, but as for "the world is getting crazier" - well, I don't know. As time shifts on, I think the current trend in TV is that it's getting more gun and hunting friendly. I sure didn't have shows like Duck Commander, etc. on my TV ten years, and even the mainstream TV shows are getting this direction too. Breaking Bad, for example, is not really pro-gun, but rather like "telling it as it is", Lost repeatedly sent the message that gun control is bad guys taking the guns away from good guys, in the last season of House MD there's an episode where a dad of a sick gurl takes her deer hunting "so that she has a chance to participate in the tradition", an the viewer is supposed to sympathise with the dad. I don't remember this in shows from ten to fifteen years ago, they were all "bad, bad gun, bad, bad hunter" kind of thing. Some people's honest opinion is that guns and hunting are bad, and if you believe in democracy, you've gotta learn to leave with it.

I had never heard of Melissa Bachman previously but after reviewing her website, http://www.melissabachman.com all I can say is WoW!!!

I'm not much of a trophy hunter but I enjoyed watching her hunt.

The truly troubling part of this is that Nat Geo doesn't equate hunting with conservation. Hunters were the original conservationists and still are. We are fortunate to have the variety and abundance of animals in the year 2012 because the hunters who came before us saw fit to protect the animals and provided money for their conservation. That's the message that needs delivered loud and clear.
