we flushed several were able to put one in the pot. My shooting reminded me I need less time at the bench and more shooting sporting clays. I'm hopeful that a good year lies ahead. I have two dogs, a 2 year old and a 11 year old springer and both did really well considering they move at very different paces and we flushed 5 birds in less than an hour. I need to work on my screaming downhill through the trees shot.....tons of fun though.

Good shot! I never mastered the "twisting thru the ponderosas downhill and slantwise" shots. Every once in a while we'd get one to flush across a clearcut, tho (and I got a few with my Woodsman! Probably shouldn't mention that here....)

Congratulations. I love blue grouse. 5 birds in an hour is respectable. I went out this last weekend and flushed 4 birds in about 5 hours of hunting with one coming home. How about some pictures of the dogs?

pic is from 2 years ago. My old dog Maggie's (my left side)last blue hunt and Lucy, Magg's Granddaughter's first hunt.Briar is at far right. Lucy has Grandma's nose and drive and looks like she will make me one hell of a birddog. Feels great to be back chasing birds.

That is my E. C. Ogden 12 bore,SLNE. Medium to low quality coil spring sidelock. It has great wood, engraving and stock dimensions. Choked the way I like it, Cyl/Full. That one is a keeper.

Good for you Steve!
And I am always impressed with old guys who have taken good enough care of yourself that you can chase dogs at 9,000 feet.
Best,
Mike

I was out for the season opener in Alberta on Saturday and had a fantastic day. Flushed 7 Blues and my parter and I shot 2 each plus 2 Spruce and a Ruffie for good measure! I missed a couple as I'm still trying to get used to the Greener side safety... I find this type of shooting much more difficult than shooting Sharptails and Grey partidge on the praries as you only have about 2 seconds to make it all happen. Glad to hear that there are actually other people around that love these birds as well. We were shooting over my friends wily old Munsterlander and I'm always amazed at how an old dog knows what to do. The dog takes us hunting, not the other way around!

My opening weekend: 5 ruffed grouse, 1 lonely snipe. The ruffs were in young aspen at about 7500 feet, the snipe in a boggy area nearby. Was looking for blues - didn't find a one.
