The lowly Winchester Model 12 'Riot Gun' (12ga factory 20" CYL. barrel) has been in production from ca. 1918 until end of this model production yet I do not seem to come across many. Why is this so? Thanks.

B/c you aren't looking in the right places? grin

More seriously, I'm going to guess that a lot of the Win 12 riot gun/trench gun production went directly to the military and police forces and, when they deemed the guns used up or obsolete, they scrapped them rather than sell them. That, or they shipped them overseas as part of "foreign military aid" like they did with M1 Garands and carbines.

Of course, who knows how many are hiding in the closets of old retired cops....

Dave is right on with this one. I also collect military arms and what he said is just about spot on. If you do find one, do your homework, there are a ton of fakes out there.

Good Luck!

The amount of fraud that is associated with the Model 12 is troubling and heartbreaking to say the least. smile

Yet, the prices are there for the fraud:

For those who do not choose to read treblig's entire link, it seems that a Model 12 that showed up in a gun store up the road from me was trashed as a faked up gun by the great Winchester authorities on shotgunworld.com. With some advice from a couple of posters with a minority position, the gun sold for $6425, a bargain for such a rare original gun.

My uncle used to have a Model 97 trench gun. It was renderd unoperable with a torch by someone. Of course the cut was right through the reciever. You know what I would like to do with the guys torch?

Get some issues of The American Rifleman from the late 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s and you will find many military surplus mail order dealers selling surplus Model 12 Riot guns for a pitance. A lot of them ended up getting a Cutts to be a still slightly short Skeet gun, while many got new barrels from Simmons or other sources.

Another reason is the Korean and Vietnam wars happened since WWII when most of these were purchased - they were used up and scrapped out! Last time I saw a Winchester in an arms room was in the 1960s. In Vietnam all the shotguns I saw were Remingtons. Kept one on my track for jungle fowl, snakes and two legged varmits. Sometimes I carried it to the commander's meeting because it irritated the General who was a big advocate for the M16 before the Army figured out why it malfunctioned so frequently.
