The Watco is very easy to apply and does not require sanding between coats. Because application of the first coats is with flooding follwed by wiping off, I do not think it would work well on a checkered stock.

I used Watco on my "go to" Amantino. It seemed to work rather well on the thing's coarse checkering. The Amantino's stock was some real light colored wood and is now a dark walnut color. I followed up with several coats of Tru-Oil for protection and it looks pretty good. Just make sure you properly dispose of any Watco soaked rags. They will spontaneously combust.

I have used Watco for many years on furniture projects. The best way I have found to apply it, is to put in on with a cotton cloth and then use 400 wet/dry paper and sand it in using circular motions. By doing this, the slurry you create fills the pores but also shaves off the "whiskers" that are raised.
I personally think it is one of the best stains out there and in sanding it in gives a very smooth surface.

I use Watco Danish Oil Finish for near all of my restoration and finishing. Great product and softer and more subdued than Tru Oil.

One of the nicest refinished stocks I own was done with Watco. Problem is, that was the old formula and we can't (legally) get that formula any more in Southern CA. The "clean air" formula we can now get is crap and not usable for anything.

I have used Watco, primarily on military stocks, because it's easy to get that "flat" finish military look with this product. As far as commercial stocks go with checkering; I have used a toothbrush to sparingly apply it to the checkered areas. I only do the checkered areas once in order to avoid any buildup.
This product does tend to darken the wood to a greater extent than I prefer so I don't use it that much anymore.
