My Dad told me, "If you can't or won't clean your own guns you don't deserve to own them." That also meant if I shot one of his guns it better be field stripped, cleaned, and oiled when it was put back. There were four ways of doing things with him, the right way, the wrong way, the Army way, and Dad's way. He was a WWII veteran and the last two ways were very similar. grin

Probably:
But I see at least one and possible two gun cases in the picture.A much more gentlemanly time as far as I'm concerned.

Toby, is that not a whiff of Young's 303 rather than No 9?
The smell of 303 is so evocative for me.

Isn't the "eye-candy" component a big part of all this? A well-cased gun looks just wonderful to me, and cases without the tools just seem incomplete. What is even better (and seldom seen) is a vintage gun in it's original case with all of it's tools still intact. Hard to beat that.

There are few sights as wonderful in the gun world as opening the lid on a trunk containing an Alexander Henry double hammer express rifle, complete with all it's loading tools and accessories.

A good whiff of Young's 303 is just icing on the cake......

If anything it adds to the value.

Drew, good to show the painting. Going North and Coming South are both in the Railway Museum in York and are quite large paintings.

I would say the gun case and accessories were vital in the days of the muzzle loader when travelling away. The case would contain shot flask and powder flask, wad cutter, nipple key and pricker, percussion cap dispenser as well as all the cleaning gear. The leather case was for travel and the mahogany case for storage.

Ah. Young's 303. Not the new stuff but the older stuff. Away with all these fancy so called men's grooming lotions; just bottle the good old smell of Young's 303. Does anyone actually know of anyone who uses men's grooming stuff. Ohter than that 'big girls blouse' David Beckham that is? Lagopus.....
