You know what really stinks? Having beautiful doubles over a century old with scratches and dings that were NOT earned in the field but rather are the result of taking them in and out of your safe. Knock it here against the Henry stock, scratch it up against the Reilly's damascus tubes, etc etc.

Can anyone recommend a make of safes that are strictly for longarms and roomy enough to accommodate standing doubles?

And YES, I do envy all you guys with entire ROOMS made safe for your treasured guns, so please, no gloating!

I like to use a gun sock on each item. Not impressive when you open the safe, but they do protect against minor scratches.

I recommend owning the cheapest gun safe you can find. Store papers in it.

Call Eastern insurance. Get $100-$200k of insurance. Get the "do you own a safe?" Discount. Don't use the safe. Prominently display your doubles in your library.

Any recommendations on a good humidity level to keep a room where guns are stored in their own cases - not in a safe?

A little off topic sorry.......

Here are some previous discussions about gun safes. I couldn't find the thread I was thinking of though.

I'm not sure it's the right way but I break them down put them in their own case and put the case in the safe.

If you have a safe with a folded in jamb, be sure to split a rubber hose and put in on the edge that protrudes into the safe.

IMO, that is pretty poor advice for at least two reasons. First, if your house is burglarized, and your "prominently displayed" guns are stolen, no amount of insurance can replace Grandaddy's Model 11, or Great-Grandaddy's hammer Parker. Secondly, when you call to place a claim for the burglarized guns, and they ask you to show them where the safe was broken into to get at the guns you mis-represented as having been locked in it, you will then be denied payment for not having them locked in it, or you will lie to them about why the safe isn't damaged from the break-in, which will constitute insurance fraud.

Get you the best safe you can find, or buy an old one like this and convert it into a gun safe for a few bucks. This one was gotten for the price of hiring a roll-back to move it. Then insure the guns to protect the ones that aren't locked in the safe.

That's about eight inches of door, and walls.
