I have a question about puting a non military sporter stock on a 1898 Krag.
I have heard that the Krag needs a barrel band on the forearm of a sporter stock because of its guard screw arrangement.
My question is, should this be a tight fit on the barrel and bedded tightly in the stock or should there be some tolerances of some sort?
Many thanks for any help from others on this.

It depends to some extent on the basic rifle you have- if you are going to sporter-modify the stock with the original issue barrel, then possibly yes- but remember all rifle barrels vibrate to some extent when fired- are you going to stay with factory .30/40 Krag load specs for the shells of that era? Or are you going to re-barrel it with a newer barrel? Have you considered a form of pillar bedding with acra-glas and a steel lug plate- as found on the 98 Mauser rifles- secured with a spanner style capped through bolt--those rifles have held up rather well over time. Maybe some fotos too??

A lot of ways to do it. I did one with a block (not a band) on the barrel, attached by 2 8x40 screws, and a #10 screw attaching the fore end to the block. It's only there to keep the stock from splitting at the thin spot at the action. Regards, Ron

IMO the two screws in the trigger guard just do not have enough support. You need the barrel band or screw into the barrel via a block or just tap the barrel for it. I've had them both ways and no problems. The krag I'm using now has a band, it also holds the sling, everything is tight at the band. Not a target rifle and works fine.

Nice to have your handloading data- about 2600 fps.?? Boat-tail spitzer FMJ rounds? Sierra? Hornady? nice looking old Krag. A friend inherited a Krag Officers Carbine, possibly may have been carried by one of Roosevelt's Officers at San Juan Hill- still in nice shape too, and for its time, the side tray magazine was a good idea- Peter Paul Mauser came up with a better one however-IMO anyway- thanks for sharing the fotos!!
