Certainly a rare, desirable an Early centerfire gun but it is duly noted there is a vast difference in saying "A" early centerfire gun & saying "The" first centerfire gun.
Sort of like Samuel Colt may have made "A" practical revolver & made it famous, But he did Not invent "The" revolver. He was about 200 years late for that & in fact his patent did not lay claims to inventing the revolver.

The shells are 2 inches, U S Cartridge Co. all brass, 7 1/2 shot, Selby Loads. Sorry I did not mean to turn this post into a For Sale one.

In my area there is one Daw and a Belgian SXS, the name is in difficult to decipher gothic text, it might be Darry, which is a spitting image of the Daw action, the same round bolt, the permanentely affixed forend, half cock back action locks. It also has a grip safety.

It looks too well made to have been one of those crude attempts to copy using a similar sounding name, although Darry in gothic could conceivably be mistaken for Daw. Has anyone heard of a maker named Darry of Belgium?

Interesting feature is that round bolt. It was used by Horsley, and also the Ithaca Flues, and then the Winchester model 21. And round bolts also form the lock up of the Beretta OUs. Probably it is easier to fit a round bolt than a square underbolt in a blind square hole.

My friend James Blacker (a barrel maker) now has the rights to the Daw firm and is collecting Daw artefacts so, I'm going to give the gun to him. He's only a young chap and very enthusiastic. You should see how enthusiastic he is to get to play with it!

This is another early 1860's gun, made by J.R. Cooper -Birmingham. From what I can research it was made about 1865. I dove hunted with it last year.

Small Bore,

Are we likely to see a revival of the Daw, with a modern round bolted action? That would be interesting to see for sure!
