I bought my first English sxs this winter. The local dealer said it was Black Widow model, made about 1909. The serial number is 82536(or 82336, the barrels and action have the second serial number, the trigger guard has the first!) I can find no reference to a Black Widow other than W&S airguns. It is a field grade boxlock, 2 1/2" chambers, non ejector, nice piece of wood. I believe a previous owner probably chopped a couple inches off the barrels, leaving me with a 26" gun choked .004 and .004. Would someone please tell me what I own?

Webley & Scott never made a gun called a Black Widow. What you probably have is a Webley & Scott Model 400. These guns are pretty plain boxlocks, but sound and excellent values.

Either the dealer was misinformed or he was just adding some "polish" to the gun to sell it.

I think the term is usually "funeral gun". It generally refers to a gun that has the receiver blackened (blued) rather than case colored or coin finished. Normally there is little or no engraving. The term refers to that style of finish, not to a particular maker.
