Modern epoxies are SO good, that there are now two schools of thought.
1) Staples(and similar) provide stability and strength and good to use. Very true with older wood glues.
As explained to me by someone who has been doing this type of work for decades.
2) There is a school of thought that epoxying in metal clips, staples, etc. in conjunction with quality, modern epoxy is contradictory to the stability of a repaired crack/break.
Modern epoxy adhesives are unbelievably good. Removing wood for the staples and then filling with epoxy, and the epoxy to metal bond, can tend to weaken a repair that will be under recoil forces.
Epoxy, in wood, is at its best when a very thin bond area between any separated parts, is achieved.
In this case, with wood that had been oil soaked, I decided to combine the two. Staples with modern epoxy!
Which of these two is correct? Who knows?
