I have been thinking about applying for my FFL simply to expedite my own purchases, not to become a dealer. How hard is it? and, do you think it is worth it? Thanks!

Steve, The process is simple. As I understand it, the ATF will only grant a license if there is a storefront location now. My FFL was issued for a shop on the third floor of my last home. That isn't allowed anymore. I had to give it up, when I moved into an area that does not allow home business's of any kind. You also are required to be actively involved in the business to try and make a profit. No hobbyist licensee.

It's worth it to get a C&R, but unless you're going to have a storefront with listed hours of operation you won't be granted an FFL.

Steve, if you are only interested in older guns you might look into a C&R license. Record keeping is simpler, but is only for firearms 50 or more years old or have been designated a curio and relic by the BATF

Steve, it depends on which FFL you are going for.A 01,dealer requires regular hours of operation, you can still run them out of your home except there can be no local restrictions against it. What I have and sounds like you are interested in is a 03 C&R FFL good for anything over 50 years old and not for dealing. Its a fairly simple process. If you want to go that route check out some sites like; http://p102.ezboard.com/bparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsHTH, Dave K

If you apply for an 01 FFL and tell them (BATFE) of your idea, you'll probably be denied the license as it is a license for a firearms sales business (or a gunsmith). The BATFE made a big push about 12 years ago to refuse 01 FFL renewals and new applications to folks that were doing just as you intend to do. You could however apply for an 03 C&R FFL license as that is more specific to a collector and will help with the aquisition and disposition angle. It will limit you to C&R status guns however, but depending on your likes, that may not be a problem. 03 FFL's are not difficult to get compared to the Dealer 01 FFL.

Steve:
Dont even think about getting an ffl for your own use. Its just not worth it. They will also make you get a state sales tax # or resale certification. IF you are doing 10-20 guns a year buying and selling, pay someone 40-50 dollars to handle the transfers for you
