I'd never owned a Canadian made gun and for some reason it has never occurred to me that Canada had a proof system for firearms manufactured there. I just bought an "extra" turkey/squirrel gun, a Canada manufactured Winchester 370 clone. It is a Cooey model 840 12ga single and it has what appear to me to be Birmingham proofmarks. I wonder, are these actually Birmingham marks and were all Canadian guns shipped to England for proof before sale?...Geo

Cooey history: COOEY, H.W., MACHINE & ARMS CO. LTD. SHOTGUNS. Previous manufacturer located in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada 1903-1961. During 1961, Cooey was sold to the Olin Corporation and placed under the supervision of the Winchester Western Division. At that point, the manufacture of Winchesters (primarily for Winchester Canada) began and continued through the mid-1970s. Cooey manufactured both double and single barrel shotguns for Iver Johnson (Hercules and Champion) during the late 1920s-early 1930s. Cooey also manufactured single shot shotguns. Pre-1961 Cooey mfg. models include: .22 rimfire smoothbore, 37A, 410, 84, Canuck 25, and Canuck 410. Post-1961 Cooey firearms made for Winchester include: Models 84 and 840.

No official Canadian proof marks on any Canadian built (or assembled} guns I've seen. The Cooey shown above must have exported to Britain at some time.

Geo.Newbern, To the best of my knowledge Canada has never had a government proof testing authority applicable to sporting guns/rifles. Any gun imported/entering the the U.K. from a country/source lacking a proof authority and/or whose test standards and proof marks are not recognised as at least equal to those enforced by the London and Birmingham Proof houses, must be proof tested and marked "approved", prior to sale in the U.K. Sale of guns/rifles not bearing a U.K. Proof mark or a recognised equivalent and/or sale of"out-of proof guns" in the U.K.is a serious criminal offence. In my opinion your gun must have been exported to the U.K. at some time in the past; either by Winchester or some other entity for it to bear U.K proof marks. In this case Birmingham marks. Canadian made guns were some times submitted for proof testing in the U.K but only if requested by the purchaser.

Yep, as others have stated, the gun must have made its way over to Britain.
