If you are going to read Faulkner's "THE BEAR", read it in the context it was published, as a part of "GO DOWN MOSES". The themes will make more sense that way. Guy De La Valdene's recent novel,"RED STAG" is also good...Geo

Gene Hill and Corey Ford provide great stories with a high human or dog factor. Patrick McManus brings terrific humor to stories that may be embellished, but most of us have lived in some manner.

The River of Doubt story is a very interesting tale of adventure going most deadly wrong. The trip was certain a major reason Teddy died so young. The impact is lost on most people. Teddy was still a young man when he left the White House and would have been a major political figure for 30-40 years more had he lived a full life.

Had he not died in 1919 most political experts agree he would have been the most likely front runner for President in 1920. How would history been different if he had a second tenure in the White House? He nearly won as a third party candidate in 1912 and would have most likely would have easily won the Republican nomination in 1920. And the Republicans won easily that year.

He shaped the first 10-20 years of the 1900's and he could have help shape the country for decades. Our lost I fear.

After reading THE RIVER OF DOUBT, I felt exhausted. I totally was absorbed in the story. Lately I've read THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. An easy read with with an earthy southern venue.

Lat night I finished a book written by T.R. jr. and Kermit Roosevelt titled "East of the Sun and West of the Moon." It was about a scientific hunting expidition through central Asia. The trip took place in the early 1920's.

My favorite texts are those written from say 1880-1930 involving the first white men to explore new areas and collect new game for scientific study. I particularly like stories taking place in interior Asia.

Trophy Room Books has a great selection of first editions. I don't buy them, but research titles there and then buy the (MUCH!) cheaper reprints.

Ruark is great. All the Hemingway is great. Take a look at Havilah Babcock, I really like his stuff.
