A dear friend in poor health has asked for help with this Model 12:
20 ga apparently 2 1/2"
# 369 (an early one)
2 barrels, 24" uncut, F and Cyl.
Orig stock uncut but added on piece and partially refinished and modern recoil pad added.
bluing on receiver about 50-60% (orig)
barrels 80-90%
Question: what about the short chamber? The ejection port is about 2 3/8" long so regular shells hang up. Should the ejection system be reworked to permit use of regular shells? Since the stock has been altered from original, the entire gun would not be of much interest to collectors, I assume. Thanks!

Don't rework the chamber and don't reblue! These are plenty of 2 1/2" shells available. The barrels should be 25"(measure the inside of the barrel from the closed bolt face to the end of the barrel).
The low serial #(early first year gun) and 2 barrels would be of interest to some collectors.
Are both barrels serialed to the receiver? A plus if they are.

Gil: I agree with Don. Don't let your buddy mess with a 3-digit Model 12. Right now, the only thing wrong is a stock that can be returned to its original configuration. My 2 cents. TT

Very scarce and collectable Model 12. The barrels will probably measure the original 25" when measured properly from the base of the chambered shell to the other end. Original wood is obtained by purchasing an early smallbore with proper wood and switching it out. No fuss, no muss. Any messing with the chambers and ejection port would destroy any value the gun now has. Same goes for any refinish of the metal. 2 3/4" shells usually work pretty well in 2 1/2" Model 12s. The RST paper 2 1/2" 20s would be my choice if the store bought 2 3/4" don't work well. Second choice would be to send it to me and wait for a check.

Some of the early Mod 12's were 2 5/8" chambers. I have one such Mod 12 and the matching Winchester shellboxes.

That was pretty much my impression. Thank you for the input. Thanks, Murph, for the idea about changing out stocks.

Coryreb, that would be 12 gauge shells if they were 2 5/8" unless they were very unusual 20 gauge shells which were normally 2 1/2". Do you have some early literature that describes the Model 12 with 2 5/8" chamber or is it marked on the gun? A true measurement of a 12 gauge chamber may be 2 5/8 but the chamber ring thingy that is part of the chamber does not come off with the barrel to be measured. No one I know has a machinist's measuring tool that can measure a Model 12 chamber with the chamber ring attached. The chamber ring is at least 1/8" thick. As far as my research has taken me, no Model 12 12 gauge was ever chambered 2 5/8 inches, even the first one.
