As I am retiring from full time work next year I have been thinking about things I might have done ,such as having been offered and turned down the opportunity to work in America. I know several people who made the transition and who have made a name for themselves ,just as I know several who either didnt or couldn't make a go of it over there . That said there are a couple of people who went to America of whom I have heard nothing more of and I was wondering if any of you know any thing of David Wilkes last I heard was working for Tony Galazan , Martin Butler an engraver and Dave Morrison formerly of Barnett Crossbows with whom I have several good laughs .

If someone knew, they would have piped up, I'm sure. The people I knew who attended a gunsmithing school, Colorado School of Trades, or Pine County Tech, didn't end up in gunsmithing-one owns a very successful machine shop, the other was driving a cement truck before he died, of cancer. Both tried to make it as gunsmiths, and just found more lucrative, or, steady paychecks, somewhere else. Carreer drift happens, and if someone who left the trade didn't stay in touch with people in the trade, you lose track of them.
Best, Ted

Doesn't work that way, if it ever did in modern times, Geo. Our supernatural gods allow bad things to happen, and a White House resident can't change the world economy i.e. China's influence on stocks today.
Sorry can't help on the gunmakers. My suspicion is that it's a tough business in Canada, dependent perhaps more on business skills than technical prowess and ingenuity. It died in my province years ago.

Thought provoking pronouncement King. I don't much agree but discussion belongs down in the romper room. If I were considering emigrating from Britain, I'd weigh the merits of exchanging one socialist sinking ship of state for another. At least he already knows where the grocery store is over there...Geo

For what it is worth, i think there is room for good double gun guys here. Your countryman Kirk Merrington could offer first hand advice on the transition.
There are political and economic challenges everywhere, but in the high end gun world, quality and experience are still valued.
I love the look Hobbs, my Vizsla, gives me following my second miss in a row.

Garand and his clip-fed military rifle being the exception of course-

Most double smiths who make a go of it either come in with an established double smith or major dealer. After getting a following in the trade it is possible to move out on your own if desired. Most American gunsmiths know very little about doubles, as much by choice as anything. They tend to do rifle or pistol work. A few do pads for doubles but not well.

gunman, cannot help you out with any of the names, but I must agree with Geo. about the next election. If there are still more stupid voters in this country and Hillary gets elected, there will be more moving your way.
