A friend of mine recently came into possession of an old hammer gun. Appears to be a 12 ga with laminated steel barrels.Hoping the brain trust here can shed some light on its maker, origin and age. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Hate to tell ya, but its JABC [Just Another Belgian Clunker] as our departed friend, Russ Ruppel, would have said. Russ was the the individual who coined that particular phrase & the acronymn followed his brutal honesty. Today, that does not mean that it has no value .. rather, that is is not a gun that holds any particularly high value. As such, it is a matter of perspective. As a mantle piece, it is in its element and probably represents very well a particular time frame and place in the history of the formation of our country, and that's being both kind, and honest too.

Shows the Belgians were paying attention. Ardent admirers of C. G. Bonehill.

Jannsen Freres made the interchangable...Pieper supplied the actions and barrels for some Jannsens...yours is one of them, 95%+ Piepers are considered JABC's...but yours looks like it still has a lot of life left in it, I would get some of those Westley Richards black powder loads if you're gonna put it on the road...(if the barrels aren't pitted)... IT IS NOT A NITRO PROOFED GUN...but all in all, your safest bet is to not shoot it, find something else to shoot

Roy, the "interchangable" suggested that the parts had a high degree of interchangability and could be simply changed in the event of breakage (requiring little to no gunsmithing), like Parker and L C Smith

The English call these "Poacher Grade", coming at the bottom of breech-loading market.
