My favorite all around author is Ross Seyfried. He typically had his facts right and you could rely on what he published. There are a lot of other authors I've(and I expect many others) have enjoyed over the years from Elmer Keith to Skeeter Skelton to Mike Venturino*
*BTW: I am told that Mike is in the hospital recovering from a very serious operation at present.

I think currently, Donald Dallas does good solid work that will stand the test of time. I'd also agree about the Double Gun Journal, not so much for any individual authors, but for the overall efforts of the editor, D. Cote. Chances are the DGJ will be appreciated way down the road.

Which category- shotguns, rifles, hand guns. For handguns- Jeff Cooper and Don Nichols- for handguns and shotguns, Elmer Keith. For rifles, Cactus Jack O'Connor- and for shotguns, Gough Thomas- any Limey SOB who thinks, as do I, that the Model 12 was/is The Perfect Repeater ain't all bad- then maybe Mikey McIntosh--

He is long gone but I liked Jack O'Connor in the 50s and 60s. Bobby

Gents,

I'll second Ross Seyfried. I've always liked his writing style, and talk about a broad knowledge base. If it goes "bang", he probably has experience with it. And he's got some serious bona fides...Africa PH...IPSC...

Warren Page was another one who could wield a pen as good as he could a rifle.

Although not considered a gun writer per se, Dave Brennan, the editor for the now defunct Precision Shooting magazine, used to write some stuff for the magazine about the early days of bench rest, and the equipment used. I always liked reading his writings.

I'm relatively new to shotguns, and so far, I'm really enjoying McIntosh's stuff.

Mike, I second Bodio and his outdoors generalism, guns, dogs, books, etc. While working the dogs this weekend on released birds, on a coveyrise we had a Coopers nail a quail in mid-air and glide off with it. Gil

When it comes to "Facts" about a shotgun I'll take Burrard hands down over any other I have ever read. His writing was not what you would call "Entertaining" but with a desire to learn about shotguns I never found it "Boring". A lot depends upon one's purpose for reading to begin with.
Most Technical books are not per se entertaining, but they are where you gain knowledge.

Couldn't agree more, Miller. Well said.

I'm just amazed how thinly some can slice the tomato. Year in, and year out.

I agree on all the authors mentioned so far but would like to add one of my favorites: Gene Hill. I love all his writings but specific to shotgunning I think his book, "Shotgunner's Notebook" rates a well deserved place in any shooter's library. While out of print I see Amazon has a number of used hardbacks offered from $4.76 and up.
