I had an idea about starting a thread on the Best used vintage ( Or whatever) gun for a smallish amount of cash...say $1500-2000. Gun of the Month type thread Not really a contest, perhaps more of a way for folks needing a nice, less expensive gun to find one.I'm done buying , so it would be fun to search the sites, as its always been. Though Im sure most folks looking to buy would rather ferret around themselves, lol Any thoughts? Happy New Year franc

The price rules out all British guns and most high end French or Belgium or German guns either sidelock or boxlock, so what are you left with? A field grade LC Smith or NID, nothing comes close to those two for their price range.

My bet would be a nice AH Fox A grade 12 gauge in that price range, with some looking they can be found.

I would just go no name British with steel barrels, nitro proofs and 2 3/4 chambers like this boxlock that has been sitting on Gunbroker for at least two years: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=533887367I also bought a nice LC Smith field grade featherweight a few years ago for $300 at a pawn shop that I enjoyed immensely. Had the stock glued up and then had no issues with low pressure loads through it. Only had $400 into that one.

You could get a nice AJ Aubrey or Meriden sidelock. There a few listed on Gunbroker. I have had several over the years and they are terrific, and reliable. Took my hammerless Aubrey bird hunting for the first time this year and it was great. Dave

Oh wait, I read that as "best gun under" as opposed to "Best gun under". I suppose that makes a difference

Under $2000 that could include: A great many Birmingham guns, Most field and entry level graded American guns Many Spanish, Italian and Turkish guns Clabrough hammer or hammerless, Greener F25, Remington 1889 and 1894, Tobin Army & Navy Sauer and Son Manufrance Ideal
And by watching carefully many net sites, auctions, estate sales there can be some great deals on fantastic guns.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

There are a lot of sxs that cost under $2000.00 that yield a good amount of gun for the money.
I think the challenge gets difficult for guns between $750.00-$1000.00.
