I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool Ithaca NID man, but about 5 years ago, at a small show- a dealer I know (in a limited sense of the word) had a later NID 20ga. Grade 4E- (later series NID w/o the snail titties cocking indicator pins) and I asked if I could handle it. Believe he was asking $2850- As I reached for my Stanley 6' pocket tape, he said-in a hurry I felt- Oh, those are 28" barrels- no need to measure- But I did anyway, and got 26& 3/4" -and years of machine shop and carpentry work have taught me how to read a yo-yo-- I handed him back the shotgun, looked at the Stanley tape in my hand, and said: "damn, guess I'll have to get this re-calibrated. and walked away, my bankroll intact. Caveat Empetor- you damn betcha.. RWTF

After 40 years of purchasing doubles and other firearms, the sheer volume of junk presented as original is beyond my comprehension.
I have a similar kit and keep my Galazan Pro Bore Gauge in my vehicle for anything that passes initial query.
A light is a must as usually the lighting at these things is dismal.
I do understand that to some dealers, the items are a commodity to be bought and sold with the least amount of effort but when I'm spending my money on an expensive double or other firearm, it's 'Caveat Emptor'!-Richard

Not nearly as comprehensive as yours, but a bit more portable...

We had three "dealers" busted within the past 2 years here in West Central MI for buying guns with counterfeit bills-

My traveling kit that has saved me a ton of grief. I generally only use it when I'm very serious about the gun. However, I have also frequently been asked by dealers and others to measure their guns.

I will never forget a wonderful bird gun I was all lathered up to buy......until my wall thickness gauge found one barrel was only .010! I politely asked the dealer if he wanted to know my findings and he quietly said "no".

Case is from a bar-b-que set that I stripped out everything and fit the tools into foam cut out to hold everything securely.

Tools include a bore gauge, wall thickness gauge, fish scales, measuring tape, chamber gauges, magnifying glasses, note pad, machinists 6" rule, snap caps, and a few other miscellaneous things.

One other tool needs a bit of explanation. I also carry a 3" piece of 1/2" brass rod. I slide it down a barrel, hold the gun vertical and snap it. The firing pin should make the rod jump nicely. If it doesn't there is a possibility the firing pin is broken or some other gremlin is lurking in the darkness. I learned this lesson the hard way.

The rest of the tables were taken up by AR15 clones, polymer pistols and few old military bolt actions. Someone may have come in and made off with the good doubles before I got there, but I didn't see a single decent bird gun in the whole show.

I admire the kit, and I hope you have better luck than I did.

Ditto. These guys are going to different gun shows than I do. I'm lucky to find a single field grade Ithaca with an asking price of $1200.

Taking a kit like this to one of the big specialist gun stores, collection liquidations, or the Southern SxS Classic, on the other hand, would be well worth it.
