Hello, I have a lot of Remington #57 primers and I want to use them to reload on modern shotsell cases.
As you know, the 57 primers are smaller in diameter, about 0.015", than a normal (#209) one.
My idea is to use a small ammount of heavy duty black silicon (the one used to make gaskets in motor parts) in the moment I put the primer inside the case, let it dry for a day and then reload as normal.
Do you think the silicon will resist the pressure and mantain the primer is place?
The gap is only about 0.007" around the primer and that space will be filled with the silicon stuff.
Do you see any potential danger doing this?

I know the best is to obtain old cases, with the smaller diameter in the primer pocket, but I been searching for years and do not find a single one here.

Yout advise will be apreciated.

Best,

Buy yourself some of the old Alcan brass shells and learn how to reload them.

You will run out of primers before you wear them out.

Importing brass shells into Mexico might be a challenge.*

I think the Jose's silicon idea just raises one question. What harm can it do? If the seal fails I'd worry about blow-back which might damage the gun or injure the guy behind it...Geo

*unless the US BATF&E helps out.

Hello Jos,
I use them with the old Remington fiber base cases since I have a good amount of them, but I've heard here that someone suggested cutting a short section off a soft drink straw and slipping it over the primer before inserting...never tried it but it sound like something that would do the trick

all best

Unless someone gives you a boxload of old Remington paper hulls, life's just too short. Walk away or donate them to the flea market.

Loading old fiber base hulls is risky business in my opinion, as portions of the fiber base can come loose on firing and lodge in the barrel with potentially bad consequences if not noticed before firing the next shell. Although I haven't tried this personally, I'd have no compunction doing so; and that would be to coat the outside surface of your #57 primers with epoxy gel, then insert same into the primer pocket. Let the batch harden overnight; then load the next day.

209 primer pockets are larger than 57s. 57s can be enlarged (if you have the old Remington cases), but you are not going to be able to make 209 primer pockets smaller.

BP claims it can make large primer pockets small again. Unfortunately, they don't explain how this is done. However, the testimonials mention 57 primers. I have thousands also.

The BP and other tools crimp the outer edge of the primer pocket inward a few .000".
The tools steel base has a small upturned edge that sits just outside the pocket and when the hull is driven down over that it swedges the thin metal inward to tighten the pocket diameter.
Yes it works.

This makes the #57 primers a tight fit in the 209 pocket,,but they are actually only engaged at that edge, not the whole length of the primer pocket.
Wether that satisfys you or not, you have to decide for yourself.

There are home-made similar solutions if you search the net.

I wondered at one time if seating the #57 through a strip of plastic like from a plastic grocery bag would punch out a gasket of the plastic each time to take up the needed dia. Never tried it. To many other things to do and gave my 57's to a blank pistol user for K9 training.
Work fine in the 209 chambered blank guns.
