Here's an interesting gun that appears to be a genuine percussion conversion.

Here's a link to some better pictures.

The more I look at it the more I wonder what's really going on.

I will say one thing......it looks like a LOT of work.

Whoever did this had to remanufacture practically the whole gun.

Unless, that is, it started out as some kind of pinfire....

I have one near identical. Those are "Hares Ears" hammers and the lever lifts to open the action. I dont believe they are conversions but a model they made in the 1870s. Heres the Pictureof mine

In the cupped area in front of the hammers at first glance it looks to be where nipples screw in ?

Another thought from looking at the pictures...could the bar in wood design originated from conversion or transition guns...from percussion to cartridge ?

So what is the the circular feature on the fences? Could they be some form of blowout plug in case of ruptured case head or primer puncture? They appear to be at a poor angle and placement for percussion nipple.

The " Plug" is not a plug but the pin for the lever that is lifted to open the breech. Looking at it from the side, particularly on mine, it looks like a Rabbits ear and Eye.

This is a William Powell, patent #1163 0f 1864, Bar In Wood shotgun,it is not a conversion from muzzle loader. I have a framed copy of a William Powell poster, showing this exact gun. A copy of this poster can be seen on page 93 of Douglas Tates book ,"The Birmingham Gunmakers."
Powell,s gun sales registers are excellent, I am sure they would be pleased to confirm the above.

Is the design a transition from percussion to breech loading ?
