I have been rust blacking and browning for some time, some of the formulas I use when browning do not take as well as they should I watch the barrels dry after they have been coated cold a nice rust appears but the closer you get to the breech the thinner the covering of rust becomes, this sometimes results in a barrel that is a nice colour one end but too light the other I know the metal is thicker there but should that make any difference? has anyone else had this problem? does anyone know how to overcome this, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've only started black and white now for a few weeks. So I'm learning also as I go. One suggestion you could try is with your formula warmed. Or apply a little heat to your barrels.

The problem I'm working through is when I etch, half the barrels are more etched than the other half. I'm having to rotate which end gets it first.
Good luck!

That may be the wrong direction. I had the same prob when I lived in Florida.

Oscar suggested further diluting the ferric chloride, to 10% or even 7.5%, weaker as ambient temp goes up (reactions double with every ~ 10 deg C increase). Both worked well for me. Within the range mentioned, rate -- not effectiveness -- is the effect that changes.

Oscar worked in a relatively cool basement shop, a point to remember when using his excellent info.

Fred.........yes Oscar did his work in a basement. However his barrels where left to hang to rust in his garage.

Also barrel browner states it's when he puts the formula on the closer he gets to the breech is when he's having the trouble. Not his etching bath.
