I have an ithaca NID that snaps shut like nothing i've ever seen on an ithaca double, very loud and crisp when closed. it's apparent that this was shot very little and the lever is far to the right but this is different from any of the other ithaca's i own. were they all like this when new from factory?

That NID had some old action filer or barrel fitter, that did considerable hand work on your gun, to make it close like that.. Maybe he was just a bit more particular than the man at the next bench.. They were all good, but maybe some just a little better.. MDC

Most if not all of my NIDs lock up with authority. I have just taken a NID apart (a task I have not done for a long while). There is a strong coli spring that closes the bolt. I suppose it can get tired with time. Also dirt, as was the case with this gun, can affect the bolt snapping closed as soon as released by the trip. As an aside, the gun I am working on appears to have never been apart since its 1928 assembly. After a ton of gunk was removed, parts are clean and shinny! Now--if I can get it back together--Good luck with your Ithacas!
Later today, All parts together and working, whew! I do need SET OF 12 GA. NID barrels to continue the resurrection. Some one out there must be tired of their BU NID by now. I find NID parts very hard to come by. Wonder why??

Not me Mr. Snyder!!! My NID locks up that way after years, since 1935, of hard abusive work!!! My Uncle used it for everything he hunted, yes he did blast slugs out of the old boy!!! He always loaded one barrel with shot if he ran into small game or birds the other barrel was always loaded with a slug for deer. The NID; dollar for dollar, pound for pound the absolute best deal out there!!
All the best
