This is off topic for our double guns, however, would like some feedback from our knowledgeable members here on this question. I am wanting to install a scope on my 1187 turkey gun. My eye sight is not the 20/10 as it once was and over the past couple of years have fired more than one shot at old Tom to harvest him. The question is has anyone added a weaver style base to a shot gun?
To be honest, I don't know weather to drill and tap for a base on the gun or use a B-square saddle mount. Has anyone been down this road of indecision?

I use one of these on an old Sauer combination gun (12ga x .43 Mauser) that I sometimes carry turkey hunting when there are piney woods rooters around...Geo

A good friend had a red dot sight mounted on a MX3 Special Perazzi for a while and it did work marginally well on trap targets. I don't remember how he attached the sight. I do however believe that the red dot would be much more successful on turkeys than on trap targets.

When I installed the "SeeAll Sight" on my combination gun, I screwed on a short piece of rail to mount the sight. I kept the folding leaf rear sights even though they were useless to me due to eyesight problems...Geo

A friend has had great luck with a scope on a drilling, shooting the shotgun barrels through a 1 1/2 power scope on flying game. He used it in Africa with lots of success.

Many Europeans choose micro dot sight like Aimpoint or pistol style "HUD" window dot sight available from Leupold, Docter,...... I like compact 1-4x scope with illuminated dot or #4 reticle.

My 2 cents from one who has been bitten hard by a recoiling shotgun with a scope that required several stitches is to go with a Burris Fast Fire III. Weighs all of 3 ounces and they flat out work. I'm not sure if your 1187 is drilled and tapped or not, but if not a Weaver style base can be added for probably $50. They are awesome little things. Line up the dot on the turkey's head and its all over. I like the 3 Minute size dot as at 40 yards it covers a turkey's head just about perfectly. BTW, I have them on both my 12 and 20 gauge Benelli's. The scope was taken off and sold. FWIW, I had the Pentax 2 1/2 power lightseeker with the circle X reticle on it. I killed a lot of turkey's with it, but it almost killed me that one day.

I like the compactness, lightweight and cost of the Burris FFIII. The Burris 336 mount is tailor made for the sight and is lower profile than the Weaver/Picatinny base mount. Sumtoy Chokes makes a custom mount for the FF series that is a better base than the Burris. It is contoured to fit the shotgun. One of the 20's has the protective cover on the FFIII. There are more expensive and less expensive systems but I find the Burris to be a good value with excellent customer service. Gil
Here are three guns I’ve fitted with the Burris and 336 base. The 20 gauges are Baikal MP-18 and the .410 is a Yildiz TK-36

Here's an unanodized prototype of Sumtoy's base mount for the Burris. They are sold anodized in black. It sits atop my Remington Spartan SPR100 .410. A Docter red dot is on the gun now. Docter of Germany invented the style of red dot that has been copied by others including Burris. Or at least they appear to be copies.

I have been fooling with Optical sights off and on for about 40+ years. Started with an old naturally lighted Weaver Qwik-Point. Currently have a Burris SpeedBead, which is the current Burris optical with a mount. They make no gunsmithing mounts for quite a few popular repeaters including 1100s, 11-87s, 870s, Berettas, etc. Works very well. I have used it for Skeet, dove, and waterfowl. The aesthetics of the SpeedBead are 100% better than the old Qwik-Point but I still wish they were less obtrusive.

Not to hijack the thread, but I learned the hard way a long time ago to shoot at the turkey's neck instead of his head, Half or more of the pattern goes over his head when you aim at it, not so when you aim at his neck. Shot over/missed a couple in my novice days until my turkey-hunting mentor not so gently identified what I was doing wrong.
