Been following the George L. thread the and topic of FFL licenses. I thought it was interesting that not too long ago, a friend of mine who has a an 03 FFL tried to buy a gun from a very well known and respected "dealer". The Dealer refused due to the 03 FFL. THe gun in question was a mid 1920's L.C. Smith. The dealer stated he would NEVER send ANY gun unless it was an 01 FFL type.
I have kicked around getting the 03 FFL, but after this experience, what good does it do if some dealers won't abide by the written law stating guns older than 50 years old apply (except of course the known assualt, and military weapons that fall in that range). Any thoughts on this? Is this becoming more of a trend, that is, disregarding the 03 FFL? Am I missing something or misunderstanding the law? Please if someone can add some info to this, I would appreicate it.

On the face of it, a C&R licence looks like an awfully good deal on discounts and no need of an FFL receiver for even one C&R purchase would offset the cost of the license. On the other side of the equation, informing local law enforement of your intent to obtain the license is mandatory. Depending on the local "political" situation, potential for interference from this authority might prove more troublesome than the "bound book" requirements of the ATF. Something to think about while bargain-hunting.

Jack, the CLEO is the guy (or gal) who get is informed and he basically has very little to say about your getting a C&R,thats up to the DOJ and BATF.Most just give the copy a puzzled look, there is no "sign off" or anything required from them, and round file it I suspect. As far as the bound book its a fairly simple thing to keep up with and a good idea to keep track of your additions and sales to the collection even if you don't have a C&R. As far as dealers not accepting it,I have found very few that refuse it(my money is just as green) and the very few that don't are mostly ignorant of the list/rules invloved and just don't want to learn so they can keep their guns and find another buyer.

Question Dave. Maybe Jason would also be interested. I assume that Chief (local) law enforcement officer is usually Chief of Police (city address) or Commandant of County Police (unincorporated areas)? Maybe things are a bit different in NH; I don't know. I do prefer your gloss on the information to local police as a "formality; I hate to think I'd be placed in the "one more SOB to watch" file. I know the State Attorney-General. Not sure how far I'd trust her!

Jack, The CLOE is indeed the Chief Of Police of you town, the general reaction is they could care less, they are much more interested in finding bad guys and getting their budget approved so they can get new toys. If your town does not have a regular police dept you may well have to go to the County or State CLEO,but again its just a copy of the form, nothing for them to do.A simple friendly introduction, reason your there and hand them the form eplaining there is nothing required by them and do what they want with it. Not sure how bad DE is but suspect you will be fine.

Thanks, Dave. By comparison to NJ and Maryland, DE has a fairly tolerant approach to gun ownership. Even so, you wouldn't want to leave your deer tag in your other coat.

Of note, in many states such as NC the CLEO is the highest "elected" law enforcement offficer in the county which for us is the good ole sheriff. Best. DR. BILL

Have the application; looked at parallax forum; haven't proceeded further. Could well be the Sheriff. Thanks for the advice.
