Thanks to all who responded. Still looking around. I'm not averse to either cheekpieces nor swivels. I'll probably go with an "experienced" gun, so termed by one of the more or less active pages at "Gun Clearinghouse." Heard em all--thrashed, beater, truckgun, pre-owned, hard-used and lightly maintained--but not "experienced." I did find something of the sort on GA. Looked like it had OJT'd as a hammer.

Hi,
Try Mark's Born Again Birdguns. I've had several dealings with him and have been totally satisfied. I just traded in a Merkel 8 that I
had gotten from him earlier on a Merkel 47E. Just tell him what you are looking for and he probably has it or can get it.
The model 8 I traded in was just fine but I just wanted something a bit fancier.

Something to think about when purchasing a Model 8.
Almost of all M8 I came across are chokes tight and extra tight. If a field gun is what you are looking for, then you are obligated to open up the chokes, while you are at it you might as well lengthen the forcing cone, consider another $200 to turn one in to a flourishing field gun. Find a M8 with the correct chokes can take a lifetime.

Larry, it is the latter. The guns come with the wood a bit too proud of the metal. I bought mine new that way. A bad stockman could fix that as simply as mounting up some sandpaper on a wooden block and sanding on the panels. This is the only place that the wood is especially proud, and being flat there, it's easy to trim down - even for a novice.

The hair line cracks are in mine too. But they haven't done anything in 15 yrs now. I consider them inconsequential in that my gun has taken a heck of a beating from very heavy loads and some very rough hunting and tumbling.

Never seen an 8 w/o a crossbolt. Mine was stiff too when I got it, but it's loosened up now after who knows how many years and shells.

Kebco has a Euro-configured 12 ic/mod; proofed 1990. Looks pretty decent and a bit less drop than the one Steve had on the sale bd. Mark has a '94 NIB but I'm not about to plop down 2100 on a boxlock unless it's something really delicate and worthless like an old graded Flues and (ha ha ha) not even then.

Here is a vote for Mark of Mark's Born Again Birdguns. I spent a week with him in gunsmith school. He is a real gentleman and quite knowledgable about most aspects of guns.
