Does anyone know where I could purchase gun case felt or baise, is it Simonis cloth?, I purchased a case from Holts, never do it again, and motivated by Damascus's postings, thought I would attempt a refiting/ relining.

happy holidays,
John

Hi susjwp. Just thought I better make things clear. Felt is a non woven fabric and is not suitable for gun cases in the long term and even in the short term, it will pill and go very shabby very quickly so do not be tempted to use even if it can be purchased for roughly three quarters the price of Baize. Baize is a woven fabric needing a high level of wool to provide that nap that gives that hard wearing and cushioning up market look to the case. I purchase my Baize from UK Fabrics on line though I do not know if they ship to other countries. Forget FELT it is BAIZE you need to use. And good luck with your project.

John, I use 80/20 Billiard Wool (pool table fabric) or Medium Weight Ultrasuede. These are the same fabrics used by folks like Marvin Huey and they work perfectly, look great, and last forever. The thing I like about Billiard Wool is you can cut a small amount into the fabric and then tear it and it tears perfectly straight. Saves some time cutting straight lines and gives a perfect edge.

Either fabric choice will run you about $45/yard. I usually buy 2 yards at a time to have plenty left over.

Good luck with your project.

I'll second Billiard cloth. I use Elmer's to glue it to the underlying case structure. One trick is to use map tacks and glue one side, let the glue dry, then apply another light glue layer on the rest of the area, stretch the fabric and hold it in place with map tacks. The tack holes disappear.

Thanks all. I experimented with several adhesvies and found 3M 77 the easiest to use. Holds well and gave me time to adjust before it swt up. I learned the hard way to over measure and then cut to size when the adhesive dried thoroughly. This case from Holts was beat up and out of square, but it looks passable with new stitching and baise. I lined the interior with 1/4 oak, lightly stained, to help reinforce the original wood, spruce or popular, cut a channel for the biase, and glued, nailed with braids, to the sides. looks nice, although it reduced the interior dimension, but this will be refit for a 20 hammer gun, so there is sufficinet room. I realize now why new cases are so expensive, this is labor intensive work. must have patience and can not be in a rush. i good learning experience for an inpatient New Yorker.

Thanks for all the advise.

ps I found billard cloth at Blats billiards in NYC, 40.00 per yard, Simonis, 70.00 per.

can't get anything to show after the first page. When I click on a item the screen blinks and goes right back to the page I started with.
