I follow Reilly's as you all know. This one looks really nice - 36" barrels. Quality, balance, artistic merit and affordability was what attracted me to the mark. Here are two up for sale: 18688 would be early 1874 - no chokes. RockIsland dates it to 1885..but because you have read the Reilly line you know that can't be true and that it cannot have the "NOT FOR BALL" stamp. (I'm sort of wondering if its been restocked - nicely done if it is). https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/76/3417/em-reilly-co-double-barrel-shotgun

And here is Terry Buffum last Reilly, up for sale on Amoskeag; Terry had 40 Reilly's and it was thanks to him that the name was preserved as well as it was - he took care of his guns: 17391 would date to early 1872. 35 3/4" barrels. If you ever thought about just trying out an 8 bore...this would be a bargain. https://live.amoskeagauction.com/m/lot-details/index/catalog/7/lot/611?url=%2Fm%2Fsearch%3Fkey%3DReilly

Argo, the Amoskeag auction is tomorrow, so no time to ask for condition reports. Do you know any details about the condition of that gun? Would you expect it to be shootable with BP?
Thanks.

LGF: Shoot Terry a PM. I'll send him an email too to ask him to respond to you. Message sent. I have followed Terry's sale for 3 years an Amoskeag seems to do a very good job of condition assessment. In my Reilly database I happed to have a couple of more pics of 17391 which I'll post below - I am still kicking myself that in 2016 when I got into Reilly's I didn't bid on a couple of Terry's guns. HWK got several of them:

I'll pass. A little too much gun for quail... Unless they are reallllly big quail!!! Is it legal to hunt anything in the US with an 8 gauge? Never saw one other than the one used in a western movie the name of which I cannot remember. These are certainly good looking pieces though.

There are a couple of members here who own a Reilly 8 bore; GaryD007 as I recall has one but I don't have pictures of it. I've never shot an 8 bore. But here is something I saved from a Brit board who was advising another gentleman on 8 bores: "I used a double hammer E M Reilly 8, with Damascus barrels for twenty five years. With two and a half ounces of #1 or #3 lead shot it was very effective on geese if held true. Its power was such that I could not shoot geese at forty yards because of severe damage to the carcass. I loaded my own cartridges too.
"The advent of the lead ban in England and Wales, saw me re-load my stock of cartridges with bismuth #1 but I couldn't get two and a half ounces into the three and a quarter inch cases. I persevered with using it on the Ouse Washes for several years but with some spectacular misses. The loss of the lead shot had destroyed the power of my old gun which shot very low at long range. I eventually sold it for a considerable sum of money. English 8 bores are very expensive and getting more expensive every year. " https://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-93967.htmlHere is Dave Weber getting back blasted while shooting 25711, Reilly 8 bore BPE rifle.

We had a board member push the fight in his state and prevailed on non-migratory species. Why I wrongly thought it was eightbore is beyond me. Gil
