This Ideal, currently on GB, has markings I have never seen before (I will probably spend the rest of my life saying "I have never seen that on an Ideal"). I remember seeing "normal" on some gun(s) in the past, but not on an Ideal.

Its meaning?

Thanks,
Mike

Good gun for a normal guy?

Just kidding. Supplementary mark to designate a shotgun with 65mm chamber length, 1924-1962.

Ted

Thanks Ted. My friends know I am unfamiliar with "normal."

You are welcome.

You with an Ideal, me with a Darne, trust me, I’m right there with you.

Isn’t normal the level of proof? French guns tend to have tons of proof marks which tell me very little.

As an aside I dated a French girl who wore flats and was fairly flat in other respects. wink

No. Normal is the chamber length. I actually have seen just a few guns so marked, and I do not believe any of them were Darnes.

Some guys like the “fairly flat” in other respects side of the coin, so to speak.

Someone for everyone.

In France, circa 1924-1962, it certainly was.

A side note-I never imported a 2 1/2” Darne. Mine were 2 3/4” or 3”.

Everything fits with what I have on French proofmarks, 1924-62. Interesting that they put the "normal" mark on each side of the flats. Like one chamber might be 65MM and the other 70MM? That would be strange, even by French standards.

Chokes are also very clearly marked, which you don't see on a lot of French guns.
