You nailed it-- this has the bolted style top lever- and 4 screw heads visible on the side of the frame-- Is this Lewis design less "complicated" than the Crass design that preceded it? Are the firing pins integral with the hammers- as on a Parker or a Fox? What does the "S" stamped on the water table signify? Thanks to one and all- RWTF

RWTF, The Lewis is very similar to the Crass. I would not consider either to be a complicated design. The firing pins are frame mounted. The "S" signifies the grade as a Quality 1 Special, so it should have a semi- pistol grip stock and fluid steel barrels.

Right on the money- and thanks.. I only went by what the late Michael McIntosh wrote in his book "Best Guns"-- I'm going back to the local sport shop that has this 16- see if the barrels "ring"- and check the chokes, trigger pulls, firing pins with snap caps- good stock dims (for me)-- as are those on my 1929 era 12 gauge 2E grade NID-- RWTF

Gonna pass on this-- 28" barrels choked Imp. Mod. & Full- clean, no pits, pass the ring test- chambers are 2&9/16-- but the deal breaker is the very heavy trigger pulls and the small size top safety and the slight travel- hard to see the S on the top tang strap- albiet the only real safety is the one located between the ears-- also, price of RST 2&1/2 paper hull 16 7/8 ounce loads is a tad higher than for either 20 or 12- so, I guess my 12 gauge Grade 2E NID will be the only Ithaca in my gun safe-- Thanks for all the fine info and feedback-RWTF
