38 Si 116

&

Si 116

Cannot be a proof date of Jan 1916 based on the Waffenamts

1938 could be a proof date but there is no month.

Another possibility is the 116th gun proofed in 1938, but what is the "Si"?

Any information appreciated!

Here are the pics from my post on Gunboards.
Haven't hosted them elsewhere yet.

Put in a Google Search for:

"Si" marking on Mauser rifle barrel

(use the quotes)

You'll come up with quite a lot of discussions about the marking as found on the Mauser rifle bbls and some on the recv'rs as well.
I personally have no idea what it stands for. But the general consensus of the internet crowd seems to be that it's the ID code of the steel source Company for the raw rifle bbl blank.
The numbers possibly a steel lot numbers or other identifying numbers. Date possibly?.

Some say (guessed) the Si meant Siemens.
Another source lists it as 'Unkn' and seen on examples produced by JP Sauer.

Here's one discussion about the bbl blank supplier codes and mentions 'Si' a couple times:
https://forums.gunboards.com/archive/index.php/t-50939.html

If the Waffenampt # on the markings is WAa135 then those are of Oberndorf/Mauser inspection . They used that assigned# in 1935 and again from '41-'45.

Kutter,

Thank you! Some humor that my question has gone unanswered on the Gunboard forum.

You may want to ask your question at the German Gun Collectors Site. There are several there who may be able to help.

"I saw on the Commercial firearms section of Gun Boards a man with a Geco Sporting rifle asked what the markings under barrel represented. The 38 Si 116 is for date 1938 with barrel Steel by Si = Silesiastahl firm lot 116. German Military required all steel supplier codes and lot numbers so any defect barrels could be tracked etc. Regards,. Jon Speed"
