I saw a Browning Sporter for sale on GI and the barrel stamping read "special steel 2 3/4 and 3." Were those barrels steel shot safe or proofed for steel shot or does that refer to some Browning in house barrel steel metallurgy like Winchester steel?
thanks, John

keep it simple and keep it safe...

I have shot steel in my BSS 20 Sporter with no problems, choked about SK/LT Mod. On our duck opener a few days ago, my blind partner shot his limit using steel in a BSS 12 fitted with Brileys, no issues. He was shooting Fasteel 3" #1 and #2.

Browning advises that their Japanese-made guns are appropriate for use with steel.

I have a Charles Daly/Miroku 500 12ga 28" barrels someone opened to IC & Mod. I shoot steel down to #2 in it with no damage that I perceive...Geo

Browning website does not advise shooting steel shot in the BSS, however it is quite common practice in Western Canada. Opened up chokes are recommended, and shot not larger than #2 in Modified choke. Your gun, your risk.

May I suggest bismuth instead of steel shot? The price has come down considerably and in my experience, it kills better than steel. No risk to the gun and no ballistic downside.

Bismuth's better, steel's still cheaper. Both will Keel...Geo

Opened up chokes are recommended, and shot not larger than #2 in Modified choke. Your gun, your risk. Interesting. I wonder if they recently changed their guidance. IIRC, their warning used to apply mainly to Belgian-made guns. Of course there's the general advice that it's not a good idea to shoot steel through chokes tighter than modified.
