A friend called last night wanting my opinion on a Fox 20-bore ejector gun. He sent a few blurry pics so that I could tell it was an A Grade, but the serial number was 5 digits; 27XXX. My McIntosh book is packed away but I told him that, based on my McIntosh recollections, Graded Fox 12-bore guns were in a serial number block from 1-50000, 20 gauge guns in a 6-digit block beginning at 200000, and 16 gauge guns in a serial number block beginning at 30000. If I was correct, the gun in question would be a 12-bore; but I could be way off. Please advise.

It's this danged keyboard Ed; but no I didn't miss the highly legible serial number; identical on both the water table and fore iron.
Thanks.

Mind if a "Fox" asks a question about a AE 12 I saw Sat. at an area gun show.30" Chromox Barrels and the later Gough influenced Germanic scroll. The seller didn't want me to remove the barrels and forearm- his gun-his rules, and the SN was blurry on the trigger guard bow- so I couldn't verify the exact number, but as it had Chromox and not Krupp Flustahl tubes, that told me that it might have been made after 1917-18-- But here's the unusual thing I noticed- when you push the top lever over to the right, to open the gun, the lever moves right back to the closed gun position, that is, it does not stay to the right of top center until the gun is closed. Funny, but my Utica Sterly 20 bore, the lever stays to the right until closed. How come??

The rotary bolt stop pin (my terminology) is malfunctioning or missing. The pin could be gone, the spring that pushes it up gone, or the whole thing frozen in place. It is very easy to lose that spring when you remove the trigger plate screw.

It is not likely a missing final digit. That would imply that there were over 70,000 20 gauge graded guns made. Only about 3500 were made.

My friend isn't up to speed on Fox guns and was simply given bad information; the gun is indeed a 12-bore.
