Modern engraving is like decorative decoy carving. It has so much detail that it is like a staged photo, beautiful but too good to be true. Every single engraved part is so filled with detail nothing is left to imagine. Where carved decoys and early engraving give more of a rough sense what things were but require a bit of filling in the dots. At least these engravings are not pornographic like a Pgun I saw a couple years ago. That had so much detail you needed to put a skirt on it.

In Nebraska too! Wish I would’ve known that when I lived there. I did a lot of duck hunting in that Kearney area, and I see he’s from Holdredge, I used to do some snow goose hunting out there too. I miss Nebraska.

There is a more up to date website, or at least links to various resources and store, at engravingforum. It is quite extensive, various game animal and portrait examples, but tons of scroll work too.

I think those who are trying to replicate or get original vintage factory engraving chased are better off finding engravers who utilize the old hammer chisel method. I think those certainly talented engravers who use power engraving tools are better suited for custom work. YMMV for sure.
