Winchester made these Model 54s with the NRA Townsend Whelen- styled checkered stock. This one is chambered in 270 WCF
and has the original 20 inch barrel-made in 1935 and has later features common to the Model 70. It came out of Montana 20 years ago and was set up for hunting, including
D&T receiver and bolt modification & safety to augment mounting a scope. Very well balanced. The Bichrest Winchester Model 54 book features this
rare NRA Short Rifle among its rare sub-models. It has used a Lyman Alaskan period scope. Shows some stock finish wear and 85% bluing remains. Excellent bore-accurate.
Thinking of trading it or selling it toward an early Model 70. pre-1963 version. It is available. PM for price and history. RM

Sweet!! The Model 54 NRA style Rifle with Carbine Barrel appears in the 1934 Winchester catalog and is mentioned in the 1935.

Roger Rule in his Winchester Model 70 book lists the M 54 as the Predecessor, and features the NRA Short Rifle as a M 54 sub-variant.
Beginning about 1934, the receiver port as featured on the Model 70 was
also included on the later M 54s as on this 270 rifle.
The 270 WCF chambering is a bit faster than the average cartridge velocity for the 7mm Mauser
in the 20 inch barrel length. Very handy in mountain hunting for deer and sheep.
