RC - could I trouble you for the barrel lengths and weight and balance? It looks to be in passable condition. Are the barrels OE or replacements?
Having guns nicer than this one is a good position to be in!!

One barrel is original 30", and one is later, but signed J Purdey on the rib...28" ...7lb 2oz with the original barrels
I think Purdey fit the new barrels and restocked it in 1974
I made a typo in my previous post, the serial is 130xx...

Recently, Holland and Holland in New York had a 28 gauge Purdey Funeral gun with a gold inlaid "5" on the rib. I shouldered it, swung it around, it fit me so well. I wanted it so badly, but I was afraid I would locate the other four and then I would have no house. The owner probably knows what the story of his gun is. Maybe he would tell it here. Montana, what is a set of five called?

Rocketman, OK...now I've got the letter...it says the gun was restocked in 1974 but nothing about the barrels...also says the gun was made in 1889

There was an article about then newly reintroduced Purdey hammer gun in either Shooting Gazette or The Field. In this article the author wrote that it was reintroduced at request of some wealty Americans. In fact one elusive "Baron" from Midwest ordered three of those hammer guns, but I can't remember whether they were matched, composed, or just three distict guns. Well, guess there is at least one "Cowboy Rippon" or ".com Rippon" among you out there!

Dave, as I said, the 1908 carbine is an anomaly as well, in that it's in 6.5x55...they weren't supplied in that caliber...at least not in the US...the previous owner lived in Geneva, so maybe they were supplying them to the Swiss in that caliber...I just bought an early Swiss gun catalog in hopes of learning more about the Steyr line there, but it'll be a week or two 'til I get it...the gun does not look re-barreled or refinished in any way...it has the same long swept pistol grip as my Steyr 16ga SxS...It's the first cased carbine I've seen...I can post a photo or two if you want...
Joe, The ONLY reason that you are interested in the other guns is so you can stir up more vicious posts...no thanks ...I want this crap with you and lowell to end...

Man owns a James Purdey and claims to have nicer guns I'd like to see them.
I'm ready to learn Robert.
