Roy, Thank you...Maybe your onto something with Victor Singh...The period is correct...The social circles that Rocketman cited seem correct...and, I didn't mention it before, but the previous owner was one of India's ambassadors to the UN...that's why he lived in Geneva... Robert you may have the first Purdey ever obtained by painting someones bathroom....Lord Rippon should've been so lucky.
I'd be willing to do some yard werk for it ?

yes I would enjoy seeing the pictures,will show you the one I bought too,not cased like yours but neat adjustable cheekpiece.
As I am sure your know,the 6x5X55 was what the Swiss Mauser was chambered in so that would certainly be possible with the Geneva connection.
The info I have on mine,whihc was rebarreled with a Krupp in Kessel,is from a man in the M/S collectors Association.I will be happy to forward his email to you,perhaps he can help with yours as he was quite knowledgable.

RC - 1889 sounds right for the 13xxx serial - I"ll check it later against my refernces. I say nice gun and good position to have better. You might want to contact Purdey's and see what they will tell you - date of delivery and original configuration, but maybe not the original owner. If it was OE part of a trio, you can be sure it belonged to someone of means. XC might be interested to discuss with you.

The picture in "The Big Shots" shows Prince Victor in action,assisted by two loaders, with a cartridge boy standing back. Also shown is a separate picture of Victor and a lady seated,waiting for a pheasant drive to begin. The same book, page 44, shows Lord de Gray using a trio of guns.
As a matter of interest, some English gunmakers,including H&H have produced sets of four and more guns, often in different gauges.

Recently, Holland and Holland in New York had a 28 gauge Purdey Funeral gun with a gold inlaid "5" on the rib. I shouldered it, swung it around, it fit me so well. I wanted it so badly, but I was afraid I would locate the other four and then I would have no house. The owner probably knows what the story of his gun is. Maybe he would tell it here. Montana, what is a set of five called? That gun is now owned by a good friend of mine here in Nebraska. When he got it, it was slightly off face and had 2 1/2" chambers even tho marked 2 3/4. H&H took care of both problems immediately and without complaint. The letter from Purdey's states that the little 28 was made up as one of a matched pair. They were marked "5" and "6" because "obviously, the gentleman already had four other Purdey guns." I love that quote, it is so upper crust British. HTH, sv
