Externally in “NRA Horrible” condition, the Metford Rifling has survived and despite one deep pit near the muzzle it still shoots reasonably well.

Originally made in 1882 at Enfield as a .577/.450 Martini-Henry Mark III rifle it was converted by by B.S.A. in 1896 into its present configuration Carbine, .Artillery, Martini-Metford, .303” Mark III.

The butt marker disc reads “May 1900, 3 Field Troop, Royal Engineers, Rack number 34.”

3 Field Troop was formed at Ladysmith in May 1900, using personnel from the Balloon Section, Royal Engineers. So, undoubted Boer War service.

The opposed “Crowsfoot” Broad Arrow mark is the “Sold out of Service” mark.

I don't know who that is, but I would be inclined to not mess with him.

The Carbine shown on Gunbroker was made at Enfield in 1880 as a .577/.450” Carbine, Interchangeable, Artillery, Martini-Henry Mark 1. Thus IC1.

It was subsequently converted, prior to Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, to a .303”.The rifling appears to be Enfield with square corners to the lands so a Carbine , Artillery, Martini-Enfield, .303” Mark II (as converted from a Carbine, Marks I and III were converted from M-H rifles).

Rob Davidson, who is a considerable Historian of the Boer War, kindly put me in touch with the Great Grandson of Major (later Major-General Sir) Gerard Heath, commander of the Balloon Section at Ladysmith and later 3 Field Troop, Royal Engineers to which my .303 M.M. A.C. III was issued.

He has kindly copied to me these photographs from the family album. Unless it had been issued to the photographer my Carbine, rack number 34, is almost certainly one of the 40 or so to be seen in the photographs.

For those interested in the Boer War, and in particular the Battle of Spion Kop, Rob Davidson delivered a very interesting talk recently to the National Army Museum.

I hope that it remains available on this link:-
